The movie depicts the life of the king of Neapolitans comedians, the great actor and playwright Eduardo Scarpetta, portrayed here by Toni Servillo. Scarpetta, biological father to Titina, Eduardo and Peppino De Filippo, devoted his life to the theater, creating works that went on to become timeless classics, like Miseria e Nobiltà. He achieved great success and was the protagonist of the great dispute with Gabriele D’Annunzio for Il Figlio di Iorio, a parody of the poet’s work which was at the center of a memorable trial.
